Where do you store your guns in your home?
Gun storage can be a touchy topic. It’s surprising how many folks simply stored their firearms under the bed only a few decades ago. Not exactly the most secure location!
Fortunately, opinions on gun safety have evolved since then. Today, the vast majority of firearm owners take care to secure their firearms safely in their homes. However, that doesn’t always mean that the firearms are optimally stored to prevent long-term damage to the guns or to stop others from finding them. To do these things, you often need specialized equipment. Here’s what we recommend:
Gun Storage at Home
If you have a firearm collection, chances are that you store it in your home. You’ve likely put quite a bit of money into your collection, so you want to make sure that it is safe from theft and damage. And if you’re a parent or grandparent, storing your firearms securely is even more important!
While schools teach very basic gun safety measures, we believe that the videos shown are entirely inadequate and out-of-date. Kids understandably don’t take them very seriously. If you want to make sure that your kids or grandkids know about firearm safety, you need to teach them yourself.
Rather than hide your firearms from them, which can make the firearms seem all the more mysterious and exciting, actually show your kids or grandkids your guns. Defuse their curiosity before they go looking for the firearms themselves. Of course, doing this doesn’t necessarily ensure that your kids or grandkids won’t go looking for your guns. That’s why the responsibility lies with you to ensure that your guns are stored safely in your home.
A firearm safe is an excellent investment in making sure that the only ones who can get to your guns are those with the key/combination. Not only that, an excellent quality gun safe can help protect your firearms from the elements (although if you place the safe in a damp basement, the elements are going to affect your guns).
You should also NEVER store your ammo with your firearms. Though that’s a dangerous idea anyway, it’s also against the law, according to the Firearm Act:
(c) it is not readily accessible to ammunition, unless the ammunition is stored, together with or separately from the firearm, in a container or receptacle that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into.
By following that simple piece of advice, you can prevent tragedies before they happen.
Is Home Storage the Right Option for You?
Still, many gun collectors feel uncomfortable storing their firearms in the home, whether children are regularly present or not. A gun collection is a huge investment. Imagine if there was a break-in and your guns were stolen. Even if they are insured, that’s still an incredible loss.
Some gun collectors are also uncomfortable with the cost of gun safes. If you want a safe that’s large enough to hold firearms like rifles while also offering a measure of environmental control, you could be looking at a very expensive purchase. And that’s just for a single safe! Plus, firearm safes are incredibly heavy, making them difficult to place and move around your home as needed.

Second, our Newmarket, Ontario location is fully insured, meaning that you are fully covered if the unthinkable were to happen.
Finally, the site is monitored 24/7, so you can be sure that your collection will be safe from theft!
What’s New at GTA Guns
The significant changes to the way we store firearms come in how you access your guns. Before, you would need to make an appointment with us to pick up your firearms. Not anymore! Our Newmarket facility now offers high-tech security protocols so you can pick up your firearms whenever is convenient for you without needing to make an appointment.
To access your firearms, you’ll need to pass through two electronic security devices and one mechanical security device. From there, you’ll open your personal locker. We offer two options: a long locker (15″ wide, 18″ deep, and 72″ high with 2 top shelves) and a pistol locker (12″x12″x18″).
When you’re finished using your firearms, you’ll take them back to the facility and put them back in your locker. We also offer both long-term and short-term storage—perfect if you’re going on vacation and want the guns out of the house for the duration of your absence!
If you have an extensive firearm collection, we also still offer our long-term, not-immediately-accessible storage option. With this option, you do need to call ahead to arrange pick-up and drop-off, but it’s still a super convenient way to store your guns securely!
