You’ve Inherited a Restricted Firearm: Now What?

You've Inherited a Restricted Firearm: Now What?

Finding out what’s in a loved one’s will can be such a bittersweet experience. The wound of losing them is still painfully fresh, but finding out what they left you can also be an incredibly touching experience.

It can also be an incredibly confusing experience. Often, we are willed things that we… aren’t quite sure what to do with. Like being willed an extensive set of mint condition salt and pepper shakers that were accumulated over their lifetime. Or maybe being willed a 28-year-old cat. But one thing that can really throw people is when they inherit their loved one’s firearms, especially if they’ve never owned a gun before in their life. What do you do with them? Well, we can help you there!

If You Plan to Keep Them

If you have or are planning on starting a firearm collection, you need to know the importance of safe firearm storage in your home.

This can often be a pain in the butt because of the number of steps that you need to take to guarantee they’re safe. You can use a trigger lock, that will prevent your firearms from being loaded or fired by an unauthorized person, but they’ll still be loose in your house. You could buy a gun case to store your guns, although if they’re in one for too long, moisture and other environmental causes could damage them. Or you could invest in a gun safe, which can hold multiple firearms in an environmentally-controlled space but could also cost you up to $2,500.

There is another option. You could always store your newly-inherited firearms with GTA Guns. Our safe-storage facility is super secure and always under 24/7 surveillance. The entire storage facility is insured, meaning that if an unthinkable disaster like a massive fire happened, your guns would be completely covered. The facility is also kept at an optimal level of humidity to ensure that the firearms are never stored in a less-than-ideal environment.

And if you want access to your firearms, that’s no problem. Just call us to schedule a pickup or dropoff time at your convenience. You only have to make a quick stop at GTA Guns on your way to the shooting range, and you’ll be all set!

If You Plan to Sell Them

If you don’t have much interest in firearms, and yet you now find yourself in possession of one or more, then you may want to get rid of them. To do this, you have a number of options.

You could hand them over to the authorities, and they would take care of them for you. And by taking care of them, we mean destroy them. To be honest, this is a waste of useful guns and, if your loved one willed them to you, they probably wouldn’t want them destroyed.

If the firearms have any historical significance, you could see about donating them to a local historical society or museum. Although you wouldn’t get any monetary compensation for this, it could count as a tax-deductible charitable donation.

However, most people who wish to get rid of their guns want to sell them. This makes the most sense to us, as you get money in your pocket and someone else gets a beautiful firearm to add to their collection. That said, selling a gun can be trickier than you may think.

Private sales can be a massive headache because of the number of steps you need to go through. You need to agree to a price, exchange PAL (Possession Acquisition Licence) information, transfer the gun to a buyer by calling the Canadian Firearms Program (1-800-731-4000), and then close the sale. Plus, there is always the chance that you could get scammed out of your firearm by less than trustworthy buyers. Finding a buyer can also be a headache, as you can’t legally list guns on Kijiji or other online sales sites.

We find the best way to sell your firearm is to use a firearm auction. In this situation, all of the headaches are taken out of your hands. With GTA Guns auctions you can store your guns for the entire month before the auction. We put them through our GUNCHECK™ system to make sure they are in perfect working order to guarantee the highest-possible price. Then we post them on our auction website to be viewed by potential buyers all over North America. If someone wants to view your firearms before the auction, they just need to call us to set up an appointment.

After the auction, your job is simple. You get sent the proceeds of the sale. That’s it. We will transport your former firearms to their new owners, do the transfer, and handle all the other paperwork. This is why so many people choose GTA Guns to handle their firearm sales. It’s a pain-free and easy way to sell your guns!

So, if you’ve inherited one or more firearms and you’ve absolutely no idea what to do with them, feel free to get in touch with us at GTA Guns. We’ll walk you through the entire process of selling your new guns and get you their cash value through our auctions. We can also answer any other questions you may have about our other services!

We look forward to selling your firearm to a worthy buyer!
